Microsoft Windows Server 2016

Windows Server 2016 relies on cloud services and exclusive features

Windows Server 2016 is the most up-to-date server operating system from Microsoft, with particular focus on the use of cloud services. This is to achieve more flexibility and speed. The usual functions for network administration have been further developed and improved so that Microsoft Server 2016 has gained a further improvements compared to its predecessor. New is the licensing model for core and CAL units for the Datacenter and Standard versions. This offers new opportunities for large companies, without increasing as usual the price of the basic versions. Similarly, some improvements and enhancements have been implemented in the Windows Server 2016 Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) and in Azure Active Directory to determine which resources are accessible and which are not accessible based on user identity. In this way, the configuration of the access is as well improved.

Windows Server 2016 for beginners and professionals

Through the various versions, Windows Server 2016 provides the right tools for both beginners and professional users to create and manage networks. With the Essentials version, the operations are very easy and the user is freed from too complex functions, so that even a non-IT professionals can work wonderfully with it. The integrated assistants provide help during all work steps. This variant is especially interesting for small businesses. The versions Standard and Datacenter require a certain technical know-how and are suitable for larger networks. The features in Microsoft Server 2016 are adapted to these requirements.

Exclusive features in Datacenter version.

The Datacenter version is no longer identical to the standard version in Windows Server 2016, but has been extended by some exclusive features. These include the "Shielded Virtual Machines", which protect data within virtual machines from unauthorized access, the "Software Defined Networking", a new method for the central management of physical and virtual network devices, the "Storage Spaces Direct" and “Storage Replica ", which offers new possibilities for data storage and backup. This adds value to larger companies with complex infrastructure and high virtualization.

Server-core-based licensing and CAL-units

As far as licensing is concerned, much has changed in the standard and datacenter variants. It has been converted to a core-based licensing, so it must be ensured how many active,  physical, cores have a CPU. For the previous versions, the standard and datacenter licenses for two physical CPUs are valid. With the new license model, a change took place from a Pro-CPU to a Pro-Core-based licensing. It is assumed that a server has at least 8 cores per processor and a total of at least two processors,  a total of 16 cores. For each server, 16 cores are the minimum, and at least 8 cores must be licensed per CPU. Thus the license costs for servers with up to 4 processors and up to 8 cores remain identical. Better equipped servers have to be upgraded with additional licenses. The supplementary licenses are available in steps per 2, 4 and 16 cores. It is also necessary to purchase the appropriate users or device CALs.

However, there is nothing fundamental changed about access licenses (Client Access Licenses = CALs) for Windows Server. As before, a CAL is required for each user or device that accesses a Windows server. Device CALs are assigned to a specific device and allow an unlimited number of users to access the server. User CALs, on the other hand, are personally identifiable, so that they can access the server with their license on any number of devices.
